January 2020 Staff Spotlight - Mrs. Julia Harmon
Mrs. Harmon comes from a long line of educators. Her mother, Mary Alice Harmon was an English and French teacher at Bondurant as well as her brother, aunt, and uncle who are/were college professors. She says she is thankful she found her passion and has followed in her family's footsteps, helping to educate young people and change the world one student at a time. Mrs. Harmon says, "I can't believe I get to do this every day. It is my hope that all my students find what they are passionate about, then find a way to make it their career. They will love their days at work for the rest of their lives, just as I do."
Julia Harmon has been in education for 24 years. She started teaching at King Middle School in Harrodsburg as an art teacher for grades 5-8 before working for the Kentucky Department of Education for 7 years. While at KDE she was a Middle School Program Consultant and a Program Manager for the Individual Learning Plan. After leaving KDE, she was hired to fill the art teacher position at Frankfort High School where she plans on staying until she retires. Her favorite part about teaching is being in the classroom with the students and helping them accomplish their goals. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Fashion Art and Fashion Marketing from Lindenwood University in Missouri as well as returning to get her Masters in Studio art from there as well. She then decided to teach and got her teaching education from KSU, and her principal leadership certification courses from UK. She now teaches online Art courses for KSU in the evenings as well as working for the 3 Peas in a Pod Catering company.
When she is not at school she loves watching her children's athletic events and spending time with her family. She is married to Mac Yocum and has four grown or almost grown children, Ellie Yocum, Jayne Quire, Grace Yocum, and Sam Yocum. She says her greatest accomplishment has been raising four amazing kids. Ellie graduated from University of the Cumberlands and is an Archery Coach at the University of Pikeville, Jayne has graduated from Lees-McRae College with a graphic arts degree and is married to her high school sweetheart, Grace is a sophomore psychology student and basketball player at University of Vincennes and will transfer to Western Carolina University next fall, and Sam is a junior at FHS and planning on going to college for engineering. Mrs. Harmon also shares her home with 2 miniature dachshunds, Keyla and Baxter and one hyper pup named Ash. Her hobbies include cooking, art, watching sports, kayaking, traveling and photography.
